My Preliminary task for my advanced portfolio was to create a short music video with no limited time. We first listened to the song which is below and made a song and was told to make images, no sound as the track was to be played over relating to 'hating education.' This gave me the understanding that lyrics were not so important as long as me 'the artist' was getting the message across to the targeted audience.
With my group, we were very enthusiastic, coming up with ideas continuously going to locations in college we thought were approach and also actions for example, kicking chairs, smashing lockers, being rude to teachers , being in detention, running around and writing 'fuck education' on mirrors. We shot many footage also in just over an hour.
Editing placed a important part to making this preliminary as it made things interesting, as for example, speeding up something emphasises something and makes it seem more interesting. I think the speed also relates to the energetic atmosphere that is trying to be portrayed.
I really enjoyed this task as It was fun coming up with creative ideas, i.e. the bird eye view and running across the stairs. As also being fun I thought I learnt that different shots made things more interesting, additionally with the editing. I learnt that this portfolio was going to be a big contrast to my foundation portfolio as my ideas were simple to kept to being naturalist/ realistic genre.
Here below is the song that was played to us once and was used for our preliminary task:
Here is the final output of our preliminary task, Please Enjoy:
Here is a video of the footage me and group's used for our preliminary task and footage we did not include:

Magazine Advertising + History
History of Music Poster
1. Origins
The origin of music posters were hand drawn/written to advertise for local performances and musicals.
A wier audience was discovered in a relation to the advert of lithography which was progressed in the late 18th century which was all in relation to art/graphic art. Lithograph changed the advertising media and art 'world' as it allowed images to travel in ways they didn't e.g. books, prints and posters.
2. First Golden Age - Belle Epoque
This was the era were artistic sort of posters were made.
5. Nowadays - Access
Due to editing access, software. Editors are able to produce different, complex posters. Here are some examples of magazine posters. You can the contrast due to font, image, colour and composition.

Digipak
Digipak is called this as it stands for digital and packaging.
Digipaks were first created by Meadwestvaco, and their product, called 'Digi-Paks' is trademarked. However, as the format became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers, the generic 'digipak' came to be used to describe all soft CD Packaging.
Digipaks are a type of CD Packaging made out of CD packaging made out of card material. They are economic good as they are cheaper than a normal cd album.
Digipaks are like a book which have usually 4-6 panels. They are good and bad things about digipaks:
PROS -
- They don't crack
- More environmentally friendly made of recycled paper
- Economically better than jewel cases CDs. From research I discovered cd cost compared to digipak)
- They are more personal then a CD album due to exclusive photos, e.g. or song lyrics.
Customers get more of a personal response to digipak than CD)
CONS -
- Do eventually rip and paper begins to peel apart and seperate.
- Not much protection for CD.
- A digipak is not as popular in the digital age as people download their music through illegal downloading and i-Tunes.
Ben Peters
Ben Peters is a urban music director who has directed music videos for artist such as N-Dubz,Sway and Talay Riley.
Ben Peters spoke to me and my media class and gave us vital information on producing/ directing music videos. This gave me an insight in creating my music video as I gave me an understanding what needed to be done, tips, for example to be creative; different angle shots and misc-en-scene is important as for example in Talay Riley's Humanoid, the dancers moving in robot form and electric lighting related to what the song was about and related to the electric sounded beat.
The essential notes that I took down and learnt were:
- The reason why music videos are short is for a simple business reason; music channels are enable to include as much videos as they can.
- Key notice that the less you shot makes it easier in the editing process and helps organising as it identifies a clearer vision of what you really want as shooting too much footage may be difficult in what you want to include in the video especially when It comes to the editing progress.
- It does not matter about if the song is good or the lyrics, It matters about the visual.
- You do not have to create a narrative based music video all the time; it can be explored through being performance based.
We looked at two visual music videos created by Ben Peters:
N-Dubz - Best Behaviour - Notes on what Ben used to be effective:
The genre Hip-hop/rap is codes and conventions through the mansion, expensive cars, speedboats. The Props have been used that relate to the codes and conventions such as designer clothes showing the wealth and ability to buy these stuff this also goes to jewellery and personalised bags to show they are on a different level and make things seem different.
The shots of the tattoo would seem as relative to hip hop artists as they are mostly to have a tattoo.
Location also places an important relationship to the artist as in this video the exotic area shows yet again the money to be able to go these nice places.
Talay Riley - Humanoid - Notes on what Ben used which was effective:
Lighting electric to go with beat/sound
Shots of lips
Shadow to show something is different
Black background to show darkness maybe through the robotic imagery
Robotic imagery has been portrayed also through the quick mechanical images throughout the video;
I think this also messes up the audiences mind through these quick flashes.
Dancers are shadowed which shows emphasis on the body movement.
Additionally the editing helps; been shown through the robotic font words within the video and electric robotic outlines on the artists' body.
I researched on his music video related to my genre, hip-hop/ R'n'B directed by Peters which is called Who do you think you are? by Mz Bratt
This has been a stereotypically performance based music video. It is a crowded music video with people in the music video are aged around 18-22 showing some of the targeted audience.
The people are energetic, dancing, smiling, brightly coloured and being mischief which is expected from a performance based music video to be full of energy which this video fulfills.
The grafitti denotes also the genre and this has been shown through the props i.e. hoop earrings and jewellery.
I personally that Ben Peters workshop has been useful as it made me know more in depth for my own
genre codes and conventions as he directs videos of the genre I am using for my own video.
I can understand why he directed the videos the way he did, for example, in the video above it is very performance based and I feel that it was done to portray attitude which is lyrically wanting to be protrayed.
I also learnt to connect to the song, audience, feel my artists goals, objective and to be very creative/ think out of the box.
Visit to Rich Mix
Thursday 18th November 2010, I and media class went to Rich Mix and studied about music videos. I thought this helped me get a clearer understanding of how music videos are and the process. I also learnt in depth the codes and conventions. We watched the presentation from OCR Pete Fraser, working in the industry Liz Kessier and music video director, Corin Hardy.

ANDREW GOODWIN: Method of Analysis
The beginning of these two videos are very similar.
ROBBIE WILLIAM mimicking James Bond is one of things Goodwin was talking about in relation to what sort of things directors do.
VISUAL ASPECTS ONLY - This is not from a past music video but contemporary but it shows how music was conveyed just through visual aspects. Linking the beat and lyrics to these types of visual views; lines and colours.
Introduction
Hi, my name is Tiamara. I am seventeen years old and currently an A2 Media student. The task for this year is to make a music video, digipak and magazine advertisement. This year I am studying A2 Drama and AS Sociology. My hobbies are socialising with friends, reading and when I have spare time I like to work on my personal blog. I'm also am going to University this year to study Broadcast Journalism.
I have studied AS Media and now am studying A2 Media. As now learning A2 Media I have learnt so much from the foundation portfolio. I have learnt to use the editing system, how to use the software, the different shots plus when to put it in camera shots and that timing has to be in order and never to leave things to the last minute. The problems that occurred last year was that my group done this and our group lost our work and had to start all over again. I thought we understood the concept and what we were trying to tell our audience however the camerawork let us down, as in many parts of our film the camera was not levelled or shaky. I feel that in this year, I and my group are prepared to take challenges and we have planned what we want and set to start our work. In this year we know how to use the equipment; editing software, camera and tripod which is an advantage in creating this music video.
In AS Media Studies our assignment was to create a short film for a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 4. It has to have the following elements usefully Camera Movements, Misc-En-Scene, editing, Sound and titles/credits. I was the actress and did a bit of editing. This year I would be participating in the same as last year, being the artist and editing. I would be also (as also the rest of the team) organizing the music video; location booking, calling up extras and getting props. From last year I would take in the knowledge of representation, knowledge of how to use the equipment and performing in front of the camera.
Our assignment this year is as is said above, is to create a music video; around 2-4 minutes and two ancillary texts; digipak and magazine advertisement. It needs a consistency so the audience are able to understand what the audience is about. To gain marks in the music videos the following needs to be done and to the fullest to reach good grades: misc-en-scene, variety of shots and angles, lighting, concept (if narrative based or performance,) have good cuts, visual atmosphere and editing skills. It also needs to connect to the audience.
I problem that might occur is lack of team work if they are arguments as people might have different imagery of the music video may be, also the chance of losing work as last year.
